Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The Special Issue focuses on statistical mechanics, information theory and nonlinear dynamics as a framework for understanding biomedical and biological systems, as well as on the interplay of this framework with modern machine learning, including large language and foundation models. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Entropy, complexity and information-theoretic measures for biomedical signals and images
- Non-extensive statistical mechanics (Tsallis entropy) and long-range correlations in physiological and genomic data
- Nonlinear time-series analysis of EEG, ECG/HRV and other physiological recordings
- Complexity analysis of genomic sequences and biological networks
- Large language models and foundation models applied to biomedical text, physiological signals and genomic sequences
- Genomic and protein language models: Representation learning and complexity or entropy measures of learned representations
- Information-theoretic analysis of large language models: Token-distribution entropy, perplexity, scaling laws, emergent behaviour and criticality in deep networks
- Statistical-mechanics perspectives on transformer architectures (energy-based formulations, attention as an interacting many-body system)
- Entropy-based uncertainty quantification, calibration and hallucination detection in clinical and biomedical applications of LLMs
- Physics-informed and interpretable machine learning for biomedical applications
- Critical phenomena, self-organization and scaling in living systems

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Entropy is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI’s English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
